Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

As I have posted on other threads I have terrible static (white noise) on the icon when there is a pause during a conversation. I can still hear static when the other party is speaking but it is extremely loud during moments of silence. This coupled with everyone I speak with telling me I sound like I'm underwater and or muffled, has relegated my Icon to paperweight status, it is utterly useless. I have reset both phone and icon multiple times daily as well as installing the original software, to no avail.

Please reply to this thread if you are having one or both of these issues. I will call support tomorrow as I believe it has been too long for me to return the icon to the store, though I've heard this is not a matter of a few faulty units. I'll keep you posted.

Please advise and thanks in advance.

I am having the same issues as you, but also my connection between my iPhone 4 and my Icon keeps dropping.  When you look at the Icon app you do not see the iPhone 4 ever paring with the headset.

I have this exact same problem. I keep hearing the drop connection sound every few minutes. I also keep being told the sound is really muffled and people can't hear what i'm saying.

Also the AD2P has a lot of static

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

I'm having the same problem with my Jawbone Prime. I've been using it for a couple of years with my old iPhone 2g with no problems. Since receiving my new iPhone 4, I get the same problems you guys are experiencing with your Icons.Interestingly, I had no problems pairing the Prime up with the iPhone 4. However, every call is dropped at least once. I know I'm not in a bad service area as the iPhone shows 4 - 5 bars. Every person I try to talk to says they can't hear me, as if my voice is muffled, and the calls are very staticy. Interestingly, I can hear them just fine. When I switch off the Prime onto the iPhone handset, suddenly all the problems clear up. Very frustrating living on the technological bleeding edge.

It seems to be a known issue with the iPhone 4.  Link to similar topic on Apple forum:

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

Thank you all for posting here, though we have no solution as of yet all the information we can accumulate is helpful (thank you for the link to the apple thread).

If it helps anyone I have found that if the icon is turned off and I turn it on to answer an incoming call, it will sound muffled everytime without fail, so I've taken to leaving it turned on non-stop. Of course that creates problems in and of itself.

I am also getting disconnects during calls and when the icon reconnects it is in "muffled mode" due to connecting during a call rather than prior to it.

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

You guys have soft rest both the Jawbone and the iPhone, right?

*Delete bluetooth profile on iPhone.

*Soft reset iPhone - home and power button hold until it turns off

*Reset ICON - Plug in wall while holding jawbone talk button - don't let go until it pulses red slowly

*turn on iphone, put ICON in pairing mode, and re-introduce the two devices to eachother.

Please try that and report back.  No one mentioned it, so I assume this hasn't been tried yet.  Give it a shot.

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

I think I have the answer. At least it worked for me with my Prime. It totally resolved all the issues I was having. Terrible call quality, dropped calls, etc.

After working with Jawbone online support (Props for their online support. They were very helpful), it seems there is a 'super' reset in addition to the soft reset as noted by bukipup. It resets the Prime to factory settings and is a different way to pair the Prime up with the iPhone 4. Here are the instructions that worked for me on my Prime. It's very important to delete the Jawbone profile from the iPhone first.  I'm not sure this will work for the Icons, but it would seem to me that it might. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary.

Jawbone support:

"I would like you to try a standard reset then a super reset on your Jawbone to resolve the issue.  The first step is to delete your old Jawbone profile from your phone.

To reset your Jawbone Prime simply follow the steps listed below:

    1. Press and hold down the Talk Button on the Jawbone Prime. (It does not matter whether the Prime is on or off.)

    2. Connect the Jawbone Prime to the USB charger cable. (The cable needs to be plugged into an active USB port or to an electrical outlet via the Wall Charger unit.)

    3. Release the Talk Button.

    4. Disconnect the Jawbone Prime from the USB charger cable.

Turn on the Jawbone.  It should begin to flash red every six seconds when it is turned on.  While it is flashing red press the following sequence of buttons.

NoiseAssassin Button, Talk Button, Talk Button, NoiseAssassin Button, Talk Button, Talk Button

The Jawbone should flash red/white/red/white showing that it is in a manual pairing mode.  Pairing mode will last for three minutes or until pairing is complete.

1. Set the mobile phone to search for all available Bluetooth devices.

2. When the search is complete, select "Jawbone" from the list of devices shown.

3. Enter the passkey (0000) and press OK to pair the Jawbone with your mobile phone.  (When the pairing is completed, the Jawbone will beep and the LED indicator light will rapidly flash white eight times.)

(Note:  For the passkey, please be sure to enter four zeroes, not the letter "O".) 4. If prompted by the phone to connect, select "Yes" (this will vary between phones)."

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

[ Edited ]

Hi everyone. Just went through a marathon testing with my ICON and my iPhone 4 because I was having the same static problems, noise and dropped callls. I want to confirm that from my findings-- it is most definitely the iPhone(4). I am sure of this because I was able to repeat the same steps with a 2nd Jawbone 2 and the results were the same. As another poster described, my iPhone4 does not like to connect into a call from a state of being turned off. If the ICON or my old Jawbone 2 is ON & I initiate a call or answer a call, everything is fine. What's repeatable is, accepting a call while both headsets are in the OFF position and then mid-call, turning them ON and switching to Bluetooth. Every time, this causes the muffled sound descried by the person on the other end. Strangely, while experiencing the muffled call, I can switch out of bluetooth -- to the phone & back and most times this corrects the problem but not all. To add to my testing, I deleted the ICON profile ("forget this device") from my iPhone, paired with an old Motorola Razor and followed all the same tests. I could never get the Motorola/Icon pairing to sound muffled. Hope this helps everyone.

Update:

Apple Care was very interested in this repeatable issue and promptly wanted to get their hands on my phone. They are shipping a new one today. I'll report back if the new phone corrects the problems I was having.

Update to previous post:

Just received new iPhone. Same problem although I'm convinced it's still an iPhone problem. I wasn't able to repeat this issue on my wife's Motorola while paired with the Icon or the Jawbone 2. I need another brand bluetooth the test with the iPhone.

Re: Icon and iphone 4 - static white noise & muffled voice

[ Edited ]

My wife and I each have an ICON, I have the iPhone 4 and she has a 3G. Since we got the ICON's hers has been dropping bluetooth connection to her phone randomly, and often in the middle of calls. I used mine originally with my 3G and only experienced this one or two times. This happens when the phones and ICON's are withing 2-3 feet of each other in plain sight, not in pocket or purse. Happens at home, in car, etc. Now that I have my iPhone 4 the problem is 10x worse for me than it is still for her. I am sitting on my couch looking at my phone and every minute or so my ICON disconnects and a few seconds later it reconnects. I've even had it re-connect but not show the battery meter on the iPhone. It paired just fine initially but now is really giving me problems. Any ideas? how do I tell if I have the latest firmware? Will that even make a difference?

I initially had great call quality when using my ICON with my 3G, but now when talking to people I'm getting complaints of sounding muffled. Definitely ticks off the wife...though its kind of funny when she complains about not being able to hear me and then her ICON drops connection to her phone...only happened at the same time once so far, it was funny but really annoying at the same time.
